Alumni Association Scholarship Applications 2016

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing (2.0 GPA) who will or are currently attending classes at Buffalo State. Students must indicate the scholarship(s) they are applying for and meet the specific criteria for each. Awards are deposited directly to each recipient’s student account to be used towards cost of attendance. All alumni scholarships have been given by and/or in memory/honor of an alumnus/na. Joseph S. Sperrazza Endowed Scholarship

The Joseph S. Sperrazza Endowed Scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students working toward a degree in Elementary or Secondary Education at Buffalo State with a strong commitment to community and/or public service such as AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, or volunteering at a human service agency (City Mission, Cornerstone Manor, Red Cross, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, etc.)  Deadline to submit application is April 29, 2016.

Elementary Education and Reading Department Awards:

These awards are given by the Elementary Education and Reading Department and are primarily for childhood (CED), early childhood (ECE), and combined (ECC) majors. Some awards are available to MIITC students.

While most awards are for student teachers, there are some that are given before or after student teaching.

Candidates should include a Degree Works audit with their application. 

 

Alice Stielow Wehrung Schmidt '41 Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education

Ms. Schmidt, a graduate of Buffalo State, had a distinguished career in education. This award is for a student who majors in elementary education, shows financial need, and has a minimum GPA of 3.0.

The scholarship is intended to help with expenses while student teaching, therefore application should occur the semester before student teaching or early in the student teaching semester.

Circle of Excellence

Childhood, early childhood and combined majors who are in their last semester are eligible for this award if they have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or better.

Candidates should apply in their last semester and must be student teaching at the time of application.

Application deadlines are February 28 and October 25.

The Helfrich-Moehlau Award - Multiple Awards

This award is presented to a teacher candidate who demonstrates exceptional abilities while student teaching. Candidates will need to write an essay and possibly have an interview with Mrs. Helfrich and Mrs. Moehlau, the founders of this award.

This award has both a fall and a spring recipient. Candidates should apply during the semester in which they are student teaching.

Gloria Shea Scholarship

Ms. Gloria Shea taught for the West Seneca School District for almost 30 years. She had a passion for her work as a teacher. To honor her legacy, her son, Pat Shea, a local singer and song writer from West Seneca, has created a scholarship in her memory.

Candidates must:

  • Be an education major
  • be a junior or senior
  • have a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA
  • display financial need
  • write an essay describing why you want to become an elementary school teacher, what financial obstacles you have had to overcome, and how this scholarship will help you achieve your dreams.

Lenore Levy Exemplary Performance in an Urban/High Needs School

This award is for a student teacher who shows the special skills and disposition needed to be a successful teacher in an Urban or High Need School. Candidate should apply during the semester in which they are student teaching.  This award is given in the fall.

Application deadline is Nov. 1.

Lois W. Pearson ’51, 55 and Marion H. Benz ’66 Scholarship

To provide on annual scholarship for a student majoring in Elementary Education, and making a significant investment the life/lives of others. This scholarship shall be renewable to the recipient for up to four years providing he/she continues his/her studies as a major in elementary education.

The Norma Sutter Award - Multiple Awards

The Norma Sutter Award is given to a teacher candidate who has shown exceptional talent in student teaching. Throughout her 36 years in education, Mrs. Sutter found that successful delivery of education to young children is a unique talent. Mrs. Sutter wanted to recognize teacher candidates with this unique talent.

This award has both a spring and a fall recipient. Candidates should apply during the semester in which they are student teaching.

Application deadlines are November 1 and April 1.

Outstanding Undergraduate in Elementary Education

This award is one of the most prestigious awards given by the department.  Candidates are required to write an essay and possibly complete an interview. Candidates must have a grade point average of 3.75 or better and outstanding recommendations.  This award is given in the spring, but student teachers from the fall semester may also be nominated.

Application deadlines are November 1 and April 1.

Professional Development Schools Consortium Leadership Award

The PDS Leadership Award recognizes the contribution of a PDS Student Representative to the Consortium and teacher education at SUNY Buffalo State. Recipients are selected by the PDS Co-directors because they articulate the PDS mission while demonstrating the ability to represent the needs and concerns of thier fellow teacher candidates. Recipients have served as role models and mentors in addition to designing, conducting, and presenting research at local and national PDS conferences. This award is given to one PDS Student Representative annually.

Robert and Gloria Laskie Scholarship

Requirements:

  • Declared Major in Elementary Education and Reading Department
  • Completed at least one year at SUNY Buffalo State
  • Contributed to campus life through the participation in Student Activities
  • Brief Essay describing contribution
  • Attach Degree works
  • Overall GPA 2.5 or higher- attach degree works

Sharon Wrzosek ’82, ’89 Memorial Award for Excellence in Student Teaching

This award is for a student in the Elementary Education and Reading Department who has completed at least the first 8 weeks of student teaching. The award is to recognize a student teacher who, as a student teacher, focused on the development of the whole child, and who provided leadership and mentoring to fellow Buffalo State students. Nomination via EER Faculty Member, Student Teaching Supervisor, or Mentor Teacher with knowledge of the candidate.

The Shirley Spriegel Award

Shirley Spreigel was a long time supervisor of student teachers at Buffalo State. This award is given to a masters level student who is earning initial certification in elementary education.

Only MIITC students are eligible and should apply during the semester in which they are student teaching.

Applicants must have a letter of endorsement from a Student Teaching Supervisor.

Fall awards have a deadline of Nov. 1, spring awards have a deadline of April 1.

The Winifred Morrison Scholarship for Upper Class Elementary Education Fund

A lifelong teacher and educator, Dr. Winifred H. Morrison began  her career in the classroom teaching kindergarten, pre-kindergarten and elementary students, later using these experiences as an adjunct professor at the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education and as a guest lecturer at other colleges and universities. She also dedicated countless hours to community organizations, working to improve childhood education within families and in the community, particularly for children with disabilities. Prior to her retirement from Heritage Centers in 1995, after serving as President for twelve years, a playground designed specifically for children with disabilities was dedicated to Dr. Morrison.
